Learner Outcomes

Modules will discuss what is necessary for a functioning, well maintained and managed backflow program. A Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester is needed by administrative authorities around the country to assure the backflow prevention assemblies installed continue to protect the drinking water. Upon successful completion of the course, students are awarded a certificate of completion. Upon completion of the course the student should be able to:

  • Explain the applicable regulations relative to backflow prevention and cross connection control
  • Describe responsibilities of water purveyors, plumbing inspectors, health officials, plumbing trades’ contractors and the water customer
  • Describe the hazards associated with cross connections
  • Define cross connection and list some common cross connections
  • Explain the basic hydraulics of a backflow condition and the differences between backflow due to backpressure and backsiphonage
  • Describe the different types of backflow prevention assemblies and what backflow conditions they protect against

  • UF/TREEO only issues certificates of completion. The TREEO Center does NOT issue backflow licenses.
  • Certified Backflow Prevention Assembly Testers must check with their local water purveyor to find out what other requirements are necessary. Some water districts may require the backflow tester to also be a State licensed plumbing contractor, while other water suppliers may require the backflow tester to be a licensed plumber and certified repair technician.

Unlike a traditional classroom-based course, you do not need to show up to class at a specific time every day in an asynchronous online course. Instead, you need to complete the readings, activities, quizzes, and view the videos within 30 days from registration. Although some of the activities will be ungraded, it is still required that you complete all activities within this online course. GRADING POLICY Complete the quiz at the end of each module and complete the online final exam.

For successful completion you should complete all of the following requirements:

  • Complete all readings
  • Watch all videos
  • Score at least 70% on each quiz/exam
  • Earn an overall course grade of at least 70%
  • Complete the course in 30 days
