Summary
Metabolic Syndrome is a group of conditions that when found in the same person increase the risk of coronary artery disease, stroke and other health conditions. The conditions most closely associated with this syndrome are hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes and obesity. These also happen to be some of the most common chronic care conditions we treat as pharmacists. The goal of this program is to review these conditions and their treatments so as to better understand how they fit into the overall risk picture for metabolic syndrome.

Objectives
At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:
- Describe metabolic syndrome as a cluster of several disorders that together raise the risk of individuals developing atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, insulin resistance, diabetes mellitus, and can lead to vascular and neurologic complications.
- Explain the prevalence of metabolic syndrome and epidemiological and statistical data.
- Discuss the rationale for the treatment and management of these related conditions to decrease the risk of metabolic complications and improve patient outcomes.
Program Overview
Lecture 1: Overview of Metabolic Syndrome
Upon completion of this lecture, you should be able to:
- Describe metabolic syndrome as a cluster of several disorders that together raise the risk of individuals developing atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, insulin resistance, diabetes mellitus, and can lead to vascular and neurologic complications.
- Explain the prevalence of metabolic syndrome and epidemiological and statistical data.
- Discuss the rationale for the treatment and management of these related conditions to decrease the risk of metabolic complications and improve patient outcomes.
Lecture 2: Hyperlipidemia
Upon completion of this lecture, you should be able to:
- Perform patient assessments.
- Evaluate and manage diseases and health conditions, including appropriate drug therapy changes, in collaboration with other health care practitioner.
- Order, perform, and interpret clinical and laboratory tests related to collaborative pharmacy practice.
Lecture 3: Hypertension
Upon completion of this lecture, you should be able to:
- Review updated definitions and goals from the 2017 AHA/ACC hypertension guidelines.
- Perform patient assessment for a patient with hypertension.
- Order, perform, and interpret clinical and laboratory testing for a patient with hypertension.
- Evaluate and manage hypertension, including drug therapy changes in collaboration with other health care providers.
Lecture 4: Pharmacological Management of Diabetes and Weight Loss
Upon completion of this lecture, you should be able to:
- Identify potential complications associated with obesity.
- Analyze a patient to determine if they are a candidate for pharmacotherapy treatment of obesity.
- Recommend treatment options for obesity in both children and adults and discuss the risks and benefits of each treatment.
Lecture 5: Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
Upon completion of this lecture, you should be able to:
- Perform patient assessments for patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM).
- Order, perform, and interpret clinical and laboratory tests related to collaborative pharmacy practice for patients with T2DM.
- Evaluate and manage T2DM, including appropriate drug therapy changes, in collaboration with other health care practitioners.
Lecture 6: Continuous Glucose Monitoring for Patients with Type 2 Diabetes
Upon completion of this lecture, you should be able to:
- Define continuous blood glucose monitoring and indications for use in patients with type 2 diabetes.
- Review glycemic treatment targets for patients with type 2 diabetes.
- Compare and contrast self-monitored blood glucose monitoring and continuous blood glucose monitoring.
- Summarize glucose monitoring devices available for blood glucose monitoring.
- Evaluate results of continuous blood glucose monitoring, including appropriate drug therapy changes, in collaboration with other health care practitioners.
Requirements for Successful Course Completion
In order to earn credit for this course, participants must pass a final assessment with a score of 70% or higher. Two chances to pass the assessment will be given. If a passing score is not earned by the second attempt, the participant must re-enroll in the course. Upon successful completion of all coursework, participants must complete a course evaluation form.
