Summary

Pharmacists have an important role in providing diabetes management. The content of this program will provide the pharmacist with a review of the pathophysiology of diabetes, oral an injectable diabetes medications and therapeutic plan development. Utilizing current guidelines and recommendations, this program will provide the learner with the knowledges and skills necessary to provide routine management of diabetes in outpatient settings.  The key concepts will be addressed though case applications.

Time to Complete: All coursework must be completed within 24 weeks from the date of registration or before date of UAN expiration, 07/11/2025, whichever comes first. This course will no longer be eligible for CE credit after 07/11/2025.


Objectives

At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:

  • Discuss the pathophysiology of type I, type II and gestational diabetes
  • Discuss risk factors associated with diabetes
  • Recognize symptoms of diabetes
  • List Diabetes complications
  • Describe the mechanism of action of diabetes oral medications
  • Review dosing, efficacy, safety and drug interactions
  • Discuss the cardiovascular benefits of diabetes oral medications
  • Describe the mechanism of action of diabetes injectable medications
  • Explain the time to onset, peak and duration of action of medications
  • List common adverse effects and counseling points of injectable medications for management of diabetes
  • Explain common drug interactions of injectable products.
  • List the diagnosis criteria of diabetes
  • Discuss the treatment goals pertaining to patient's specific conditions
  • Develop pharmacotherapy plan for management of type I diabetes
  • Adjust pharmacotherapy plan based on patient's responses
  • Discuss the disease monitoring plan for effectiveness and complications
  • Review non-pharmacological strategies in preventing type II diabetes
  • Develop pharmacotherapy plan for management of type II diabetes
  • Adjust pharmacotherapy plan based on patient's responses
  • Discuss the disease monitoring plan for effectiveness and complications
  • Apply knowledge and principles taught in this program to patient cases in order to develop and adjust the treatment plans.

Program Overview

Module 1:

At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:

  1. Discuss the pathophysiology of major types of diabetes.
  2. List oral and injectable medications including dosing, efficacy, safety, drug interactions and monitoring.
  3. Develop individualized therapeutic plans for the treatment of diabetes based on patient specific conditions.
  4. Monitor the effectiveness of the therapeutic plan and make necessary adjustments.

 


Requirements for Successful Course Completion

In order to earn credit for this course, participants must pass a final assessment with a score of 70% or higher. Two chances to pass the final assessment will be given. If a passing score is not earned by the second attempt, the participant must re-enroll in the course. Upon successful completion of all coursework, participants must complete a course evaluation form.
