Summary

Pharmacies have a critical role to play in safeguarding the nation’s healthcare system and ensuring proper use of controlled substances. In the face of the nation’s Opioid Epidemic, pharmacists must fulfill their professional obligations to exercise corresponding responsibility. The validation, dispensing, and counseling of controlled substances by pharmacists is a critical intervention point for resisting opioid misuse and ensuring safe and effective healthcare for the public.

This course is approved by the Florida Board of Pharmacy to fulfill the controlled substances licensure renewal requirements outlined in Rule 64B16-27.831(6).

Objectives

At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:

  • Review laws and regulations related to prescribing, inventory records and dispensing of controlled substances to ensure patient access to pain management.
  • Describe professional judgment regarding assessment of prescriptions for appropriate therapeutic value.
  • Review and recognize proper use of E-FORCSE® (Electronic-Florida Online Reporting of Controlled Substances Evaluation program).
  • Review corresponding responsibility tools available to pharmacists that help detect prescriptions not based on a legitimate purpose.

Requirements for Successful Course Completion

In order to earn credit for this course, participants must read the Validation and Counseling of Prescriptions for Controlled Substances and Opioids monograph and pass a final assessment with a score of 70% or higher. Two chances to pass the final assessment will be given. If a passing score is not earned by the second attempt, the participant must re-enroll in the course. Upon successful completion of all coursework, participants must complete a course evaluation form.
