Summary

Medication errors and preventable adverse events remain a leading cause of death in the United States. Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians are key members of the healthcare team who should understand the risks of medication errors and strategies to prevent them.

This course is approved by the Florida Board of Pharmacy to fulfill the medication errors licensure renewal requirements outlined in Rule 64B16-26.103.

Intended Audience: Pharmacists in all practice settings (this CPE is required by the Florida Board of Pharmacy for pharmacist license renewal).

Objectives

At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:

  • List potential causes of medication errors that can occur.
  • Describe strategies to help prevent medication errors and improve patient safety in different practice settings and in special populations.
  • Identify factors that may contribute to the development of a medication error in a patient case.
  • Summarize the role of root cause analysis and failure mode effects analysis in improving patient safety.
  • Identify procedures for medication error reporting.

Requirements for Successful Course Completion

In order to earn credit for this course, participants must read the Preventing Medication Errors monograph and pass a final assessment with a score of 70% or higher. Two chances to pass the final assessment will be given. If a passing score is not earned by the second attempt, the participant must re-enroll in the course. Upon successful completion of all coursework, participants must complete a course evaluation form.
