  • This initial five-day course has been granted full approval by the EPA and the State of Florida to meet AHERA and ASHARA accreditation requirements for contractors/supervisors performing asbestos work in K-12 schools, as well as in public and commercial buildings.
  • You will receive intensive and practical instruction on asbestos abatement projects, from start to finish. You tackle hands-on abatement problems in a simulated abatement area. Safe work practices, liability and glove-bag procedures are examined in detail.
  • The cost of the course includes course materials and the examination at the end of the course. 
  • Participant must be present for entire class time to receive CEUs and a Certificate of Accreditation.
  • Daily breaks are scheduled. You will be allowed a one hour break for lunch. 
  • Required Exam: 100 question multiple-choice/closed book with a score of 70% or higher to pass.
  • An annual refresher course is required for re-accreditation.  
  • Respiratory Fit Testing:  OSHA requires medical monitoring prior to fit-testing and initial use of respiratory protection.  Although students will learn principles of respiratory equipment and observe a variety of respiratory protection equipment, they will not be exposed to conditions that may put them at physical risk.  After training, students will be required by their employers to obtain medical clearance in accordance with OSHA if they will use respiratory protection as part of their job duties.
  • Please dress comfortably on Days 4 and 5. Clothes will get dirty during hands-on activities and closed toed shoes are required.

Learner Outcomes

This course is for contractors/supervisors performing asbestos work in K-12 schools and in public and commercial buildings. In Florida, Asbestos Contractor/Supervisors must work under the direction of a Licensed Asbestos Contractor. 

Persons who plan to do asbestos work in other states should contact that state to verify that accreditation, licensure and other requirements are met.

Notes

The student, pending successful completion of the course, including the exam will receive a Certificate of Accreditation as an Asbestos Contractor/Supervisor under TSCA Title II/ AHERA. In addition, the student should be able to list the specific knowledge & skill levels needed to comply with the OSHA competent person under 1926.1101. Students will be qualified as OSHA Asbestos Competent Person at the conclusion of the course.  See the OSHA definition below.

Definition of an OSHA Asbestos Competent Person

Competent person means, in addition to the definition in 29 CFR 1926.32 (f), one who is capable of identifying existing asbestos hazards in the workplace and selecting the appropriate control strategy for asbestos exposure, who has the authority to take prompt corrective measures to eliminate them, as specified in 29 CFR 1926.32(f): in addition, for Class I and Class II work who is specially trained in a training course which meets the criteria of EPA's Model Accreditation Plan (40 CFR 763) for supervisor, or its equivalent and, for Class III and Class IV work, who is trained in a manner consistent with EPA requirements for training of local education agency maintenance and custodial staff as set forth at 40 CFR 763.92 (a)(2).
