This one-day class will familiarize the student with the tools and techniques to perform cleaning and the removal of sewer blockages in collection system pipes, manholes, and service laterals.  Class discussion will also include how the worker can contain, abate, and protect the public from any sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs) that occur because of collection system failures.

Learner Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the class, the student will be able to:

  • Describe the various methods available for pipeline cleaning and maintenance;
  • Discuss how to perform and schedule routine cleaning as a part of a sewer PM program.
  • List the various problems that can cause pipeline blockages and sanitary sewer overflows.
  • Determine the best solution method when given a collection system problem,
  • Explain how to select and use the proper tools and methods to remove blockages and clean pipe, including hand rods, rodding machines, high-velocity cleaners, and combination cleaners;
  • Explain the procedure for determining where and how to set up the equipment to perform pipeline cleaning and maintenance;
  • Discuss how to stop and/or contain SSOs and protect the public from the hazards associated with them.
  • Discuss how to identify the pipe defect and determine its distance from the equipment access point.
  • Describe the hazards present when working with sewer cleaning tools and equipment.
