In this course 3 day course you are introduced to three-phase electrical motor controls. You will learn how to properly use various types of meters to collect operating data and troubleshoot lift station panels. Actual case studies are used to familiarize you with the data and math required for motor and pump evaluation.

Learner Outcomes

At the successful conclusion of this class, the participant will be able to:

  • Describe the difference between conductors and nonconductors.
  • Explain electromagnetism and where it is applied in typical motor control circuitry.
  • List and define the common electrical units of measurement.
  • Explain safe electrical maintenance practices.
  • Describe typical safety concerns associated with water/wastewater occupations.
  • Describe common electrical components and their function.
  • Explain parallel and series circuits and how they are used in motor control circuits.
  • Describe the common electrical meters and their proper use.
  • Describe how electric motors function and their proper maintenance.
  • Describe corrective, preventive, and predictive maintenance.
  • Describe tasks and equipment used for effective maintenance.
  • Explain the use of wiring diagrams to troubleshoot problems.
  • Use an ohmmeter to safely troubleshoot problems.
  • Assemble five (5) working control circuits.
  • Use a megohmmeter to inspect motor insulation.
Several calculations and exercises will be completed to explain and reinforce several objectives.
