Summary

Pharmacists are often the most accessible healthcare providers, close to patients and embedded in their communities, with more than 90% of people in the U.S. living within five miles of a pharmacy. Because of this accessibility, pharmacists play a crucial role in controlling the HIV/AIDS epidemic, increasing timely access to HIV postexposure prophylaxis (PEP) to prevent infection.

This activity will build upon the HIV material covered within the Collaborative Practice Certification Program, introducing PEP guidelines for antiretroviral treatment following potential exposure to HIV. Upon completion of this activity, pharmacists providing services under a written collaborative practice agreement will have the clinical knowledge necessary to practice under an access-to-care plan, in which a collaborating physician authorizes the pharmacist to screen adults for HIV exposure or order and dispense HIV PEP under the written collaborative practice agreement.

This course is approved by the Florida Board of Pharmacy for 2.0 contact hours to meet requirements pursuant to CHAPTER 64B16-26, Florida Statutes, and Rule 64B16-26.300, Florida Administrative Code.

Time to Complete: All coursework must be completed within 24 weeks from the date of registration or before date of UAN expiration, 02/14/2028, whichever comes first. This course will no longer be eligible for CE credit after 02/14/2028.

Objectives

At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:

Perform patient assessments to determine if post-exposure prophylaxis is indicated.
Perform point-of-care testing procedures.
Provide safe and effective treatment of HIV exposure with HIV infection prevention drugs, including, but not limited to, consideration of the side effects of the drug dispensed and the patient’s diet and activity levels.
Identify contraindications for HIV exposure treatment.
Identify patient comorbidities in individuals with HIV requiring further medical evaluation and treatment, including, but not limited to, cardiovascular disease, lung and liver cancer, chronic obstructive lung disease, and diabetes mellitus.

Requirements for Successful Course Completion

In order to earn credit for this course, participants must complete all course case study quizzes and achieve a final overall score of 70% or higher. Two chances to pass each quiz/assessment will be given. If a passing score is not earned by the second attempt, the participant must re-enroll in the course. Upon successful completion of all coursework, participants must complete a course evaluation form.

Continuing Pharmacy Education Requirements

Pharmacy continuing education credit will be earned based on completion of this activity. To receive continuing education credit, your completion must be verified, and a program evaluation must be completed and submitted at the end of the program. Credit will be issued through the CPE Monitor and CE Broker websites.

Florida consultant pharmacist (or Florida pharmacist) numbers, NABP e-Profile ID numbers and participant’s Month and Day of Birth are required for credit issuance. UF CPE is not responsible for unissued education credits where the required information is either omitted or submitted incorrectly. UF CPE will contact registrants once by email to attempt to obtain missing or invalid information.
