Summary
Pediatric exposures to OTC medications and dietary/herbal supplements are primarily accidental but not insignificant with more than half of exposures below the age of 20 and 40% below the age of 6. Among the most frequently encountered substances in pediatric poisonings are analgesics, dietary supplements, antihistamines, and vitamins. Although a majority of exposures led to no or minimal toxicity that did not require follow-up, pediatric patients remain a primary population of concern due to the differences in pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic processes from adults.
This course is approved by the Florida Board of Pharmacy for 1.0 live general hours to meet pharmacist renewal requirements outlined in Rule 64B16-26.103.
