Summary
The increasing prevalence of kratom products and their use in the US has resulted in a diverse market that reached over $1 billion in the US in 2023. Product diversity has resulted in the sale of kratom leaf material, kratom extracts which contain higher amounts of the active alkaloid mitragynine and other alkaloids, concentrates, and isolated compounds such as 7-hydroxymitragynine and mitragynine pseudoindoxyl. Although several states have regulated kratom products in general, little current regulation addresses the potency of such products and the associated safety risks. This update is aimed at practicing pharmacists to understand the diversity of kratom products, potential drug interactions, and emerging safety concerns.
This course is approved by the Florida Board of Pharmacy for 1.0 live general hours to meet pharmacist renewal requirements outlined in Rule 64B16-26.103.
