Course Description

The Name, Image and Likeness and Athlete Compensation Course: providing foundational knowledge for today’s elite coaches to confidently operate within the complex web of NIL rules and laws while also improving recruiting and retention of athletes and bolstering their own career prospects.  

Course Outline

The course will consist of five modules:

  1. NIL Rules and Laws
    1. NCAA Rules
    2. State Laws
    3. Proposed Federal Laws
    4. Guidance for International Athletes
  2. NIL Opportunities
    1. Types of NIL activities/opportunities
    2. Co-branding and fundraising opportunities
    3. Common pitfalls
  3. Recruiting and Retention
    1. Working with Collectives
    2. Agents and Other Third Parties
    3. Legal Considerations/Issues
  4. Key Legal Issues
    1. Institutional Liability
    2. Antitrust Lawsuits
    3. Labor/Employment Lawsuits
    4. Title IX
  5. Revenue Sharing
    1. House Settlement
    2. Institutional Models

Learning will be self-paced and will require approximately 30-40 hours of time for viewing the lectures, listening to podcasts, readings, and completing graded assignments. Students will be given one calendar year for completion.

This comprehensive educational curriculum is constructed to be fully self-directed and interactive with peers, including ongoing access to a communications platform for asking questions and getting updates in this rapidly evolving space. Students are taught through educational modules, problem-based assignments and a mid-term and final exam.

All learners who successfully complete this course with a grade of 70% or greater on all assignments will be awarded a Certificate of Completion. The Certificate of Completion is evidence of successful completion of the educational curriculum requirements for the Name, Image and Likeness Certificate.

Learner Outcomes

The objectives of the course are:

  1. Describing the current framework of laws, rules and regulations surrounding NIL and anticipating future changes
  2. Understanding the types of NIL opportunities available to athletes
  3. Explaining how coaches can safely provide guidance to prospective and current athletes on NIL
  4. Understanding the role of third parties in NIL, particularly NIL collectives
  5. Describing the role of institutions in NIL and the evolving models for assisting athletes
