Course Description

Suicide to Hope (S2H). Suicide to Hope (S2H) is a standardized, manualized, one-day (8-hour) training designed for clinicians who provide—or wish to provide—growth and recovery–oriented therapy. Participants learn the Pathway to Hope (PaTH), a standardized therapeutic framework that can be integrated with any primary treatment approach (i.e. CBT-SP, DBT, BCBT, ABFT, IPT, etc.).

PaTH is not crisis intervention. It is not designed for clients at imminent risk of suicide; they need ASIST first. Instead, S2H is intended for clients who are “safe for now” and able to engage in growth- and recovery-focused therapeutic work.

A key component of growth and recovery work is understanding “stuckness”—where clients feel trapped in their suicide-related experiences. Exploring this stuckness can reveal underlying, unmet core issues. Through this process, clients can gain insight and move toward meaningful growth. You will learn how to explore this stuckness by applying a trauma informed lens.

Clinicians trained in S2H learn how to apply the PaTH model within their own theoretical orientation and clinical settings, as well as how to collaborate effectively with other treatment providers to enhance continuity and quality of care. The 8-hour training is highly interactive and includes group discussion, simulations, and reflective exercises. Additional details about the training will be provided in pre-reading materials sent via email after registration.

The training is open to current UF graduate students of counselor education, graduates of the program, and Master Clinicians in the community.

Learner Outcomes

As a result of participation in S2H, you will be able to:
- Describe how suicide experiences provide insight into therapy work

- Recognize how particularly helper qualities are needed for various steps of the therapeutic framework (i.e. PaTH)
- Understand common core and underlying issues that have gone unmet in clients with ongoing suicidality
- Develop intentionally aligned recovery and growth goals that are hope building
- Apply a standardized framework for progress monitoring (monitoring recovery and growth work), as well as the importance of celebrating successes, even the small ones!
- Integrate PaTH into one's already established therapeutic framework

Notes

Standardized procedures require you to be in attendance for the full 8 hours in order to be provided with the S2H certificate and credential. Please arrive early and come back from breaks on time. Coming back from breaks on time enables us to get you out right at 5pm. J
