Course Description

ASIST is a 2-day, 15-hour suicide intervention training that positions attendees to provide a life assisting intervention at the moment it is needed the most. Participants learn the PAL model (Pathway for Assisting Life), which has been adopted by the U.S. Armed Forces, the Centers for Disease Control, whole states, as well as used in crisis centers across the nation. Participants trained in ASIST report feeling more competent and confident to work with a person-at-risk of suicide (Griesbach et al., 2008; McAuliffe & Perry, 2007; Turley et al., 2000) and are found to have pre-post increases in suicide intervention skills, attitudes, and knowledge about suicide (Gould et al., 2013; Griesbach et al., 2008; Rodgers, 2010; Shannonhouse, et al. 2017; 2018; 2018; Turley, et al., 2000). ASIST aims to enhance our ability to help a person at risk at a time needed the most, and it values the experiences and contributions that each of you bring with you to this training. This program encourages honest, open and direct talk about suicide, which is paired with scaffolded simulations and experiential skill building throughout.

Course Outline

Learner Outcomes

You will learn to recognize when someone may be at risk of suicide, and respond in ways that help increase their immediate safety. Specifically, you will be able to:

  • Dialogue with a person at risk of suicide in a direct manner
  • Understand how your attitudes and beliefs about suicide affect your responder behavior
  • Understand how your role shifts depending upon if the person at risk is a client, student, family member, co-worker, friend, and/or community member, etc.
  • Recognize that suicide prevention is broader than suicide first aid and includes life-promotion
  • Provide an evidence-based life assisting intervention when it is needed the most

Notes

This training is restricted by invitation only.  It is considered an integral part of your development as a Professional Counselor. Doctoral students and faculty may be attending alongside you as this is the first time we have offered the worldwide leader in suicide intervention at the University of Florida.

The training tends to cost $500 per person, however we are able to bring the training to you at the cost of just your test kit and lunch. Dr. Rice is the required second trainer and we are using some funds to offset the costs of his travel and time. Part of how we are able to keep the cost so low is that Dr. Shannonhouse volunteers her time (she lives here) and Dr. Rice dramatically reduces his costs as a trainer. Both Drs. Rice and Shannonhouse are master trainers. You have a wonderful, wonderful training team
