Summary

Overuse of antibiotics can lead to unwanted side effects such as Clostridium difficile infections, unnecessary drug-drug interactions, and antibiotic resistance. It is vital the healthcare community improve the use of antibiotics in order to improve patient safety and public health.  This program  provides an overview of antibiotic stewardship in hospitals, long-term care and outpatient facilities with the goal of empowering pharmacists to address the growing concern of inappropriate antibiotic use.

Part 1: Antibiotic Stewardship in Hospitals

  1. Describe the importance of antibiotic stewardship in hospitals
  2. Describe Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Core Elements for Hospital Antibiotic Stewardship Programs
  3. Discuss the hospital pharmacist’s role in antibiotic stewardship in hospitals
  4. Describe strategies for antibiotic stewardship implementation in hospitals
  5. Discuss how to appropriately manage antibiotic use, as it applies to best practices in patient care

Part 2: Antibiotic Stewardship in Long-Term Care Facilities (nursing homes and assisted living)

  1. Discuss the importance of antibiotic stewardship in long-term care facilities
  2. Describe the role of the consultant pharmacist in antibiotic stewardship in long term care facilities 
  3. Describe Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Core Elements of Antibiotic Stewardship for Nursing Homes
  4. Discuss how to appropriately manage antibiotic use, as it applies to best practices in long term patient care
  5. Suggest strategies to promote antibiotic stewardship programs in long-term care facilities.

Part 3: Antibiotic Stewardship in Outpatient Facilities

  1. Discuss the importance of antibiotic stewardship in outpatient settings
  2. Describe the role of the pharmacist in antibiotic stewardship in an outpatient setting
  3. Describe Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Core Elements of Outpatient Antibiotic Stewardship
  4. List barriers to appropriate antibiotic use and implementation of an antibiotic stewardship program in the outpatient setting
  5. Discuss how to appropriately manage antibiotic use, as it applies to best practices in outpatient care

Requirements for Successful Course Completion

In order to earn credit for this course, participants must read the three course monographs and pass each corresponding assessment with a score of 70% or higher. Two chances to pass each assessment will be given. If a passing score is not earned by the second attempt, the participant must re-enroll in the course. Upon successful completion of all coursework, participants must complete a course evaluation form.
