Course Description

This course will establish the skills and credentials needed to volunteer as a disaster responder. Students will learn about the veterinarian’s role in the Incident Command System (ICS) and how multiple agencies participate in a coordinated disaster response. First-hand accounts will illustrate what veterinarians might encounter when deploying with a local, state, or national agency. Students will learn the best practices for relocating animals from source shelters to destination shelters in a natural or man-made disaster. Finally, students will develop their own family disaster preparedness plan and learn how they can assist in their community’s preparation, response, and recovery from a disaster. Students will complete online Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) training modules to become a credentialed disaster responder.

Learner Outcomes

After successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Describe the Incident Command System (ICS) structure and apply its principles of teamwork to disaster preparedness and response
Complete online Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) courses to become a credentialed emergency responder
Know the potential roles served by veterinarians, functioning as a leader or team member based on experience, skills, and context within a disaster response
Identify local, state, and national response agencies and their requirements for responders to serve the local and global veterinary community
Promote the health and safety of people and the environment by advising on personal, family, and community disaster readiness plans 
Advise animal welfare organizations on best practices for temporary sheltering and relocation of animals between source and destination shelters
Engage in the needs of the public and veterinary profession by being ready to respond to a disaster if activated
