Summary

Residential care facilities vary widely in purpose from long term care facilities for the aged, to psychiatric centers, to rehab facilities, to the prison system. All of these types of patient care arenas have specific needs based on population and most common therapeutic needs upon which the focus most of their effort. With this in mind often the treatment of infectious diseases is complicated by these environments and lack of specialization by the primary care providers in those arenas. Pharmacists can provide guidance in these situations to help fill the knowledge gap and help provide the care of patients in these settings.

Describe steps in the prevention and treatment of pneumococcal disease.
Describe the current common vaccinations necessary for residential care facilities.
Describe the current treatments and management for Hepatitis A and B.
Describe the emerging treatments for LTBI and for active disease.
Describe the latest therapeutic choices for the treatment of HIV.
Describe the place in therapy of new antimicrobials.
Detail the CDC/ACIP process for review of the adult schedule.
Detail the latest vaccine schedule recommendations that would apply to the typical populations of residential care facilities.
Detail the steps necessary when dealing with a Rotavirus/Norovirus outbreak.
Evaluate treatment regimens for infected decubitus ulcers.
Identify the primary concerns for the spread of tuberculosis in a resident population.
Recommend therapeutic options for multidrug-resistant Gram-negative organisms.
Review the epidemiology of TB in the US based on the 2021 CDC data.

Program Overview

Module 1: Pharmacotherapy: Treatment of Tuberculosis and Multidrug-Resistant Tuberculosis

Upon completion of this module, you should be able to:

Review the epidemiology of TB in the US based on the 2021 CDC data.
Describe the emerging treatments for LTBI and for active disease.

Module 2: Common ID Problems in Residential Care Part 1

Upon completion of this module, you should be able to:

Evaluate treatment regimens for infected decubitus ulcers.
Discuss the treatment of pneumococcal disease.
Describe the place in therapy of new antimicrobials.
Recommend therapeutic options for multidrug-resistant Gram-negative organisms.

Module 3: Common ID Problems in Residential Care Part 2

Upon completion of this module, you should be able to:

Describe the current treatments and management for Hepatitis A and B.
Detail the steps necessary when dealing with a Rotavirus/Norovirus outbreak.
Describe the latest therapeutic choices for the treatment of HIV.

Module 4: Vaccine Update for Residential Care

Upon completion of this module, you should be able to:

Describe the current common vaccinations necessary for residential care facilities.
Detail the CDC/ACIP process for review of the adult schedule.
Describe some of the latest changes regarding vaccinations that might affect residential care patients.

Requirements for Successful Course Completion

In order to earn credit for this course, participants must pass a final assessment with a score of 70% or higher. Two chances to pass the final assessment will be given. If a passing score is not earned by the second attempt, the participant must re-enroll in the course. Upon successful completion of all coursework, participants must complete a course evaluation form.
