Summary

To address this deficiency, the “Herbal & Dietary Supplement Use in Clinical Practice: A Primer for Pharmacists” course will introduce practicing pharmacists to basic definitions and procedures commonly associated with HDS. In particular, the course is intended to provide the legal framework for regulation of HDS, what potential quality indicators can be used to make informed recommendations for use, and adequate communication with patients to avoid or reduce the risk of drug interactions with concomitant HDS use.

Objectives

At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:

  • Describe the regulatory framework guiding current supplement labeling and manufacturing.
  • Apply patient-focused communication strategies to reduce drug interactions.
  • Evaluate and recommend appropriate use of HDS to different patient populations.
  • Identify the limitations of HDS use as a part of complementary and integrative healthcare.
  • Define the terms GMP, DER, standardization, homeopathy, dietary & herbal supplement.
  • Identify HDS regulatory guidelines of clinical relevance.
  • Choose an HDS based on quality indicators.
  • Categorize clinical evidence for HDS effectiveness and potential for drug interactions.
  • Describe the limited uses of the top ten HDS, their proposed pharmacological effects, and potential drug interactions.
  • Select an adequate HDS approach to avoid drug interactions in patients on multiple medications.
  • Apply knowledge and principles taught in this program to patient cases in order to improve the safe use of HDS as part of complementary and integrative healthcare practice.

Requirements for Successful Course Completion

In order to earn credit for this course, participants must pass a final assessment with a score of 70% or higher. Two chances to pass the final assessment will be given. If a passing score is not earned by the second attempt, the participant must re-enroll in the course. Upon successful completion of all coursework, participants must complete a course evaluation form.
