Summary

The purpose of this course is to provide the pharmacist with an overview of motivational interviewing terms and techniques as a communication and counseling approach designed to help patients find their own motivation to make a positive change in their behavior. Motivational interviewing is a communication style that includes building patient rapport while actively listening and responding in a respectful and non-judgmental manner to empower the patient to reach their own conclusions about making a behavior change.

  • Review motivational interviewing skills versus traditional counseling techniques.
  • Utilize motivational interviewing techniques to guide conversations regarding patient behavior.

Program Overview

Module 1:

In this module, the area of focus will be on:

  • Summarize motivational interviewing terms and techniques.
  • Describe areas where motivational interviewing is utilized in the pharmacist patient care process.
  • Review motivational interviewing skills versus traditional counseling techniques.
  • Utilize motivational interviewing techniques to guide conversations regarding patient behavior.

Module 2:

In this module, the area of focus will be on:

  • Video examples where motivational interviewing techniques are utilized contrasted with non-motivational approaches.

Requirements for Successful Course Completion

In order to earn credit for this course, participants must pass a final assessment with a score of 70% or higher. Two chances to pass the final assessment will be given. If a passing score is not earned by the second attempt, the participant must re-enroll in the course. Upon successful completion of all coursework, participants must complete a course evaluation form.
