Summary
This CPE program will introduce the participant to the assessment and management of acute pain. This program will be given in two parts. Part 1 will focus on acute non-surgical pain while Part 2 will focus on acute surgical pain and patient controlled analgesia. The principles of patient assessment using pain scales to identify the quality and severity of a patient’s pain in order to develop a patient specific treatment and monitoring plan are introduced. This program will provide the consultant pharmacist with knowledge and skill in the selection of drug therapy and recommend appropriate efficacy and safety monitoring for both opioid and non-opioid therapies used in the management of both acute non-surgical and surgical pain.

Lecture 1: Acute Pain Management for the Consultant Pharmacist Part 1
Upon completion of this module, you should be able to:

Lecture 2: Acute Pain Management for the Consultant Pharmacist Part 2
Upon completion of this module, you should be able to:
- List and compare the common multi-modal therapies used in the management of acute peri-operative pain.
- Describe the monitoring process for acute pain therapies.
- Identify concerns associated with procedural pain control.
- Describe the process of using Patient Controlled Analgesia (PCA) in acute pain.
Requirements for Successful Course Completion
In order to earn credit for this course, participants must pass a final assessment with a score of 70% or higher. Two chances to pass the assessment will be given. If a passing score is not earned by the second attempt, the participant must re-enroll in the course. Upon successful completion of all coursework, participants must complete a course evaluation form.
